  Letter To My Dear Reader

  1

  Tessa

I was at my desk, typing furiously at my computer, unconscious of the time or the hunger pangs in my stomach—when I got the call.

I’d been racing against time, trying to complete the report by six. I hadn’t eaten all day, barely left my desk, even to go to the water cooler. I needed to finish the report by six or I knew I was going to have a hard time keeping this job.

My position was one of the most coveted jobs in the advertisement industry in the city. I was only twenty-four, which meant that there were hundreds of people better qualified than me and with way more experience. I had been in this position for a mere two months, so I was easily disposable. If I didn’t impress my team leaders on a daily basis, constantly, then they wouldn’t miss a heartbeat to replace me with someone else.

The phone on my desk rang, startling me out of the sort of daze I’d gone into while typing.

I picked up the receiver and blinked rapidly, trying to hover back down to Earth again.

“Hello?” I said. I wasn’t sure who could be calling me on this line. Everyone from my team was working close to me, so they wouldn’t need to call on the phone.

“Tessa Munro?” I heard a voice on the other end. It was a woman’s voice; she sounded sophisticated, with a smooth British accent.

  “Yes?”

“Hello, Tessa. I’m Michelle Non, calling from Soar Ad Agency,” she continued.

I nearly knocked myself out of my chair when I heard her say that. Soar Ad Agency? The people who were responsible for the latest UNICEF campaigns which had won several awards just this year.

“Y…yes…” was all I could manage.

“I apologize for ringing you like this, at your workplace, but I wasn’t able to find a personal contact number for you,” Michelle said.

I hunched down over my desk, covering my mouth with a hand—if anyone was watching me, they would easily know I was trying to hide something. I had never been a natural at covert operations.

“No, it’s fine, absolutely fine. How can I help you, Ms. Non?” I said, whispering.

“I’m ringing on behalf of the agency, of course. I’m the head of recruitment, and we would like to bring you in for a quick chat,” she said.

My heart was racing in my chest. This was insane. Had Soar Agency really headhunted me into coming to work for them? They wanted to recruit me to their team? How did they even find out about me? It was a dream come true.

“Of course, any time. I’ll be happy to,” I said, fumbling and trying to keep my cheeks from flushing.

There was a laugh in Michelle’s voice as she spoke now.

“Great, we’re in the process of setting up offices in Chicago at the moment. You’ll find our address on our website. Can I expect to see you there tomorrow at five?”

I was nodding my head already, even though she couldn’t see me.

“Yes, great, of course, I’ll be there. Thank you!”

We said our quick formal goodbyes and then she ended the call. I couldn’t believe any of this had just happened. I looked around at the people working and saw that nobody had noticed anything.

I gripped the edges of my desk to steady myself. This felt too unreal.

Soar Agency was a British organization that had taken the advertisement world by storm in the past seven years. They were the brand I always aspired to work with. They did the kind of work I was passionate about.

Not only did they have high profile commercial clients like big names in the food and drink industry, and fashion and luxury brands—but they also worked with non-profit organizations and for charitable causes, for free. My personal favorite was the campaign they had created for ‘Save the Oceans’ the year before. It had done brilliantly well to raise awareness all around the world.

I couldn’t believe that they had gotten in touch with me—me! I was still struggling to make a name for myself. I’d been skipping between agencies for the past three years since I graduated college; trying to grasp a firm footing for myself in the industry.

I’d worked on a few national ad campaigns, but not in a major way—not in a way that would get me noticed by an agency like Soar.

I sat at my desk twiddling my thumbs, trying to settle myself. In one day, I could be an employee at Soar. Granted, the interview went well.

I was expecting it to be tough. I was going to have to bring my A Game on. I couldn’t wait to get out of this place, rush back to my apartment and prepare for the interview. I couldn’t wait to see if this opportunity would work for me—if I could bag this opportunity of a lifetime.

I had a smile on my face and I was chewing my lip as I tried to focus. I was daydreaming already…thinking about a little desk at the Soar Agency offices, working with a team of some of the greatest creative minds in the world! This was my chance to change my life. To really do something with all the years of hard work I had put into this career.

I’d taken a leap of faith by embarking on a journey in this highly competitive industry, but maybe now…if I got this job, all those sleepless nights would be worth it.

“Tessa! Where’s the report? It’s ten past six!”

My team leader Jack’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. He was standing over my desk, glaring at me from behind his thick glasses.

“Give me five minutes, Jack,” I said to him, but I was still smiling. I couldn’t get that nagging feeling out of my soul that my world was about to alter. I couldn’t wait.

Alfie was holding my hand when we stepped into the penthouse apartment on the thirty-sixth floor of the building. I’d tried to get the interior designer to recreate the same atmosphere as our home in London, but Alfie had his nose scrunched up in dismay.

“Is this supposed to be our new home, Daddy?” He asked, and I didn’t miss the disappointment in his voice.

“Do you like it?” I asked him and he drew his hand away from me and looked around. Alfie had never lived anywhere other than our home in Kensington—the one I’d purchased soon after his birth, five years before.

I knew moving to Chicago would be a huge change for him; something he would take time getting accustomed to. Alfie looked over at me and his nostrils were flared.

“What about Mr. Coco?” He asked about his favorite teddy.

“He’s in your room. Right through there,” I said with a smile on my face. Alfie ran into the room I was pointing at—the one which was supposed to be his. This too was supposed to look exactly like his old room in London. However, Alfie was disappointed. He found Mr. Coco there, in the middle of his large race car shaped bed.

“When can we go home?” He asked, while I stood at the door.

“This is home now, Alfie,” I told him, while he tugged at Mr. Coco’s ears.

“No, this is not. This is so small! There’s no garden. I don’t have any friends!”

Alfie was pouting his mouth, ready to throw a fit and I went over and crouched down in front of him.

“You will make new friends. It’ll be like a little adventure. We’ll do some exploring of the city over the weekend. How does that sound?” I asked, squeezing his knees affectionately.

“Till then, you’ll leave me with the nanny and work and work and work!” He complained, throwing himself on his bed and turning his face away from me. I stood up.

It was true that I worked all the time, but I didn’t expect him to understand. I was hoping that when he was older, he’d know why I kept myself busy. Why it was important for me to provide the best life for him that I could. Why I was determined to be successful.

I’d come from very little. I’d built this agency from scratch. All I had going for me, at the ripe young age of twenty-four; was a few good ideas and a fighting spirit.

“You’re always working. I never see you. You won’t take me out on the weekend!” Alfie argued, thrashing his fists on the bed. I wasn’t good with his temper tantrums, and I ran a hand through my hair. Nobody prepares you for being a single dad. Alfie wasn’t a part of my life plans, and I wasn’t prepared for him. Right now, I was trying to do the best that I could manage.

“You know I need to work, Alfie. I’ve promised you a weekend of exploring, and I’ll stick to my word,” I said.

Alfie continued to howl and hiss and thrash his hands till Penny, his nanny, rushed into the room.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Webber. Let me take care of this,” she said, reaching for my son so she could pull him up. Alfie struggled in her arms.

“Daddy is a liar!” He howled, while Penny hugged him and tried to calm him down. “He said Chicago was going to be just like London!”

I retreated out of his room, but his voice was loud in my ears. I knew he was disappointed in me. He probably hated me right now, but he wouldn’t understand why I needed to leave London. Why we needed to get away from that place…away from Gordon.

I stepped into my newly designed den, which had a wall made of glass overlooking the Chicago skyline in all its splendor. I hadn’t been to Chicago much before, I didn’t know the city well. Yet, it seemed like the perfect place to set up our new American offices. Slowly, in the following months we could build more offices, expand to New York, Boston, and LA.

I had no plans of slowing down or stopping, as much as my son hated me right now.

The only way I could get back at my brother, Gordon, and Celine; was by being even more successful. By becoming more powerful, richer…so that they would have no choice but to acknowledge the fact that I was better than them.

I realized I was clenching my hands as I stood there, staring out. I was gritting my teeth too. I didn’t want to be this angry. I didn’t want to lose my temper, but I couldn’t help it.

Every time I thought of them…about Gordon and Celine, my blood curdled and my body stiffened with rage. Did I really hate them with this gut-wrenching darkness that was spreading inside me? I hoped I didn’t, because then I wouldn’t know what I was capable of.

But I wanted revenge. I was desperate for revenge. I was a powerful billionaire with one of the most successful ad agencies in the world. And yet, there was very little I could do about my brother fucking my ex-wife.

I couldn’t stop them. I couldn’t shout or fight them. All I could do was work and work and work, like Alfie said.

But the first opportunity I got, I was going to seek vengeance on Gordon—my brother who was supposed to give me his unconditional support. But instead, we wanted to destroy each other.

I couldn’t wait to make him feel the way I felt when I found him with Celine. I had a plan, and now everything relied on this plan working out. I was looking forward to tomorrow, to finally meeting her. She had no idea what was coming.

I found the new offices of Soar Ad Agency easily the next day. The difficult part was getting out of my office in time for this interview. I had to fake a stomach bug and force Jack to give me the rest of the evening off. I was sure he was already making notes on how unfit I was for the job.

I didn’t care what Jack or the rest of the team thought of me now. All I cared about was making a good impression on Michelle Non, so I could get this job. I’d brought along my portfolio and dressed for the occasion. I was determined to get this position.

While I waited in the room outside Michelle Non’s office, I tried to stop my feet from tapping the marble floor. This building was everything I imagined the offices of Soar Agency to look like.

It was minimally designed, modern and luxurious. The few people who I saw walking around, looked busy but content. Like they would not rather be anywhere except here.

The fact was that I was dying of nervousness. I was sure I was going to break into a panic attack the moment I got called in, but there was a rumbling in my stomach—a rumbling of ambition.

This was my ticket to the life I always wanted.

I looked up when the door to Michelle Non’s office opened. A slender older woman with a tight blond bun and expensive pointy glasses; stepped out.

“Tessa!” She exclaimed, stretching her hands out towards me as I stood up. She kissed both of my cheeks, something I’d completely forgotten Euro
peans did. I gulped, hoping I didn’t look as ridiculously nervous as I felt.

“Hello, Ms. Non,” I said, as she looked me up and down quickly.

“Please call me Michelle,” she replied, then turning on her heels; she started walking towards the elevators at the end of the hallway. I followed her in a rush, although confused because she was walking away from her office.

“Your interview will begin shortly; I hope you’ve come well prepared.” Michelle looked at me with a sparkling smile. We’d stopped at the elevator doors now and she pressed the button.

“I’m going to do my best. I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am for this opportunity.” I gushed. Michelle smiled politely and then nodded at me.

“Good, you can tell Mr. Webber yourself,” she said, just as the elevator doors pinged open.

  “Mr. Webber?” I asked, confused.
